How to compare your product price with competitors on Amazon

By the TrueSellerPrice team · Updated · How we calculate

Comparing your price with competitors on Amazon sounds simple: look at the other offers and see who is cheaper. Done carelessly, it leads to price cuts you did not need to make, or that lose money. A useful comparison answers two questions: where does my price sit, and what would it cost me to move?

1. Make sure you are comparing the same thing

  • Same product, same pack size, same condition (new, used, refurbished).
  • The total the buyer pays: item price plus any shipping charge.
  • Similar delivery speed. Prime or fast delivery offers compete differently from slow ones.
  • On the same tax basis as your own price. On amazon.com, prices are shown before sales tax.

2. Summarize the offers

Note the lowest, median and highest totals. The median (the middle offer) is a better reference than the average because a single unusually cheap seller does not move it. In our example, four competitor offers range from $17.99 to $21.50 with a median of $18.72. At $19.99 the seller ranks 4 of 5 and is 6.78% above the median.

3. Work out what matching each competitor would earn

This is the step most comparisons skip. Using the same costs as our Amazon example (an $8.00 product, $0.60 freight, a $3.80 FBA fee and the 15% referral fee):

Profit when matching each competitor
Competitor totalYour profit if matchedMargin
$17.99$2.8916.07%
$18.49$3.3217.94%
$18.95$3.7119.56%
$21.50$5.8827.33%

With a 10% minimum margin, the seller's minimum acceptable price is $16.54. Every competitor in this sample can be matched without going below that floor, but matching the cheapest offer earns $2.89 per unit against $5.88 when matching the most expensive one.

4. Decide, then recheck regularly

Price is not the only thing buyers weigh: reviews, delivery speed and seller rating matter, especially for winning the featured offer. A small premium can be sustainable if your offer is better. Recheck competitors periodically, because a comparison describes the moment you made it. With only a few offers, the numbers describe that sample, not the whole market.

The competitor price comparison tool does all of the above: type in the totals you see and it ranks your price and calculates the profit at each competitor's price. It never fetches prices for you, so you stay in control of what is compared.
